Upcoming Community-Wide Seminar ─ Fall 2026
Understanding Jewish End-of-Life Laws and Traditions
The Dallas Rabbinical Council is planning a special educational seminar for the entire community, dedicated to understanding Jewish laws, customs, and practical considerations surrounding death, burial, and mourning. While these topics can be difficult to discuss, our tradition teaches that preparing in advance is an important act of responsibility and kindness that can greatly ease the burden on family members during a time of loss.
Drawing on guidance in the DRC’s What to Do in the Event of a Death resource, this seminar will provide a comprehensive overview of the steps from the moment of passing through burial to the mourning period. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the roles of family members, rabbis, funeral homes, cemeteries, the Chevra Kadisha, and community organizations, as well as the many halachic and practical decisions that may arise.
The program will also address important topics such as pre-arrangements, burial options available in the Dallas area, kavod hameis (honoring the deceased), shiva observance, funeral planning, and communal resources available to assist families. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance from local rabbinic leadership.
Representatives from each of the funeral homes that regularly serve the Orthodox Jewish community will be present and will offer brief presentations explaining their services, procedures, and how they work together with local rabbis, cemeteries, and families to ensure that Jewish burial traditions are carried out with dignity and respect. This unique opportunity will allow community members to become familiar with the available resources before they are needed and to make informed decisions for themselves and their families.
The DRC encourages all adults to attend this important community-wide event. Through greater awareness and education, we can help ensure that every member of our community is prepared to honor loved ones in accordance with Jewish law, tradition, and the highest standards of kavod hameis.
