Jewish Burial

A Final Act
of Kindness

Orthodox Jewish burial is rooted in the Torah’s mandate to treat the deceased with dignity, respect, and compassion, ensuring that every aspect of the funeral and burial process reflects the sanctity of human life. Guided by halacha and carried out through the dedicated efforts of the chevra kadisha and the community, Jewish burial provides honor to the departed and comfort to the bereaved.

Supporting Families Through Life’s Most Difficult Moments

Orthodox Jewish Burial Resources in Dallas

At one of life’s most difficult moments, the Dallas Orthodox Jewish community is blessed with a network of rabbis, funeral homes, cemeteries, and community organizations dedicated to ensuring that every Jew is afforded a burial that reflects the dignity, sanctity, and traditions of Jewish law. The Dallas Rabbinical Council (DRC) serves as a resource for families navigating the many practical and halachic decisions that arise following a loss, helping to ensure that the deceased is treated with the utmost honor and respect.

Jewish tradition strongly emphasizes kavod hameis—honoring the deceased—and encourages burial as soon as reasonably possible. Families are encouraged to contact their rabbi immediately after a passing to receive guidance on the many halachic and practical matters that follow. The rabbi works closely with the funeral home, Chevra Kadisha, the cemetery, and family members to ensure that all arrangements are conducted in accordance with Orthodox Jewish practice.

The Dallas community is served by two cemeteries that provide Jewish burial sections and graveside services:

Hillcrest Mausoleum and Memorial Park – (214) 363-5401 – dignitymemorial.com
Restland Memorial Park – (469) 925-1436 – restlandfuneralhome.com

Families should note that cemeteries oversee the burial grounds and graveside operations, while funeral homes handle funeral arrangements and related services. These are separate entities, and families are free to choose any licensed funeral home regardless of where their burial plot is located.

The Dallas Jewish community is served by four funeral homes experienced in assisting Orthodox Jewish families:

Dallas Jewish Funerals – (972) 424-1141 – dallasjewishfunerals.com
North Dallas Funeral Home – (214) 674-0857 – northdallasfuneralhome.com
Restland Funeral Home – (469) 925-1436 – restlandfuneralhome.com
Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home – (214) 363-5401 – dignitymemorial.com

Any of these funeral homes may work with any cemetery in the Dallas area and will coordinate with the Chevra Kadisha and the family’s rabbi to ensure that arrangements are carried out in accordance with halacha and local community standards.

Burial plots may be purchased through local Orthodox congregations or through Mount Zion United Jewish Cemetery, which maintains sections at Hillcrest Mausoleum, Memorial Park, and Restland Memorial Park. For information, contact Bill Finkelstein at (214) 228-5757 or (214) 417-1707; in emergencies, contact Jeri Finkelstein at (214) 334-6554. Families are strongly encouraged to make pre-arrangements with both a funeral home and cemetery whenever possible, easing the emotional and logistical burden on loved ones during a time of grief.

The Dallas Jewish community has also established important resources to assist families facing financial hardship. The Jewish Federation, through Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas, maintains a fund to help provide dignified burials for indigent community members. In addition, the Dallas Hebrew Free Loan Association offers expedited interest-free loans to assist with funeral expenses when needed. These resources help ensure that every member of the community can receive a proper Jewish burial regardless of financial circumstances.

Orthodox Jewish burial practices include several important halachic considerations. Jewish law requires burial and prohibits cremation. Autopsies should not be authorized without consultation with a competent rabbinic authority, and embalming is generally not part of traditional Jewish burial practice. These and many other questions can arise unexpectedly, which is why rabbinic guidance is so essential throughout the process.

Beyond the funeral itself, the DRC and local rabbis remain available to guide families through the stages of mourning, including shiva, shloshim, the recitation of Kaddish, yahrzeit observances, and the dedication of a matzeivah (gravestone). Through these resources and the support of the broader community, Dallas families can find both practical assistance and spiritual guidance as they honor their loved ones and preserve the timeless traditions of Orthodox Jewish life.
